Born and raised in Taiwan, Peter Y Lai has been teaching piano since 2008. As a boy, he loved to go to his childhood church. There, he heard choirs singing and organ playing beautifully. For this reason that he fell in love with classical music. Although his family was poor and there was no money for him to play any instruments, he grabbed any chance he had to listen to classical music from radio or singing songs by himself.
When he was 11 years old, he was sent to a Christian Boarding School, and there he started playing piano! The precious 6 years at that school he was nurtured with piano playing and singing lessons! His was called “Piano” by his peers!
In 1968 he was admitted to Taiwan Theological Seminary where he met his future wife Janie! They both had the same piano teacher! His schooling at the Seminary was interrupted by military services for two years, before he entered the prestigious National Cheng chi University in Taipei majoring in Philosophy! Graduated in 1974, he and his wife Janie came to study piano at University of Minnesota for 2 years!
Following his piano studies, he then went to Lutheran Seminary to become a Lutheran pastor. He was ordained in 1985 at Trinity Lutheran church in San Gabriel, California. During the 30-some years of ministry, he was serving 3 congregations, while teaching as a professor at Trinity Lutheran College in Seattle Area, and serving as the Regional coordinator.
He took early retirement in 2006 and moved from Seattle to Las Vegas, where established The Lai piano studio in 2008, which continues until this day!
