Michael has had a love of music ever since he was a young child. After growing up seeing his uncle regularly perform on guitar, banjo and mandolin, he first took up guitar and later piano at the age of 10. In middle school, he began playing the clarinet, and soon after the saxophone in band and jazz band, where he immediately fell in love with the sound of the instrument and the versatility it provided. Inspired by his middle and high school band directors and private lesson instructors, Michael decided to pursue a future in music and earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of New Mexico. Throughout his college years and beyond, he regularly performed on saxophone with a variety of groups ranging in genre from jazz and concert bands to latin styles such as salsa, ranchera, cumbia and even country. He also regularly utilized instruments such as ukulele and piano during his time teaching elementary music and choir. He currently teaches private lessons on saxophone, clarinet, piano and ukulele.
Michael has taught music since 2015 in a variety of settings, ranging from elementary general music and band, as a woodwind clinician for middle and high school bands, and as a private lesson instructor for students grades 6-12. His students have been successful, auditioning for and earning spots in district and regional honor and All-state bands. He loves to have fun while teaching, engaging students by getting to know and utilizing their own interests, and strives to promote a life-long love of music in his students, as his teachers have done for him!
